When you hear the phrase “three things to do to save your relationship”, what comes to mind first?

If you’re like most people, you probably think: “What do I need to DO? What actions should I take to fix this?” And often, that focus turns outward toward your partner, their behavior, or the relationship itself.

But saving a relationship starts with what happens inside of you. These three steps aren’t quick fixes, but they are powerful shifts that can open the door to healing and connection.

1. Let Go and Trust

The first question to ask yourself is: What attachments do I need to let go of?

When we desperately want something to work out, fear and control sneak into every move we make. We hold tighter, push harder, or bend ourselves out of shape trying to make things “right.” But remember, you cannot force anyone to be in a relationship with you. And if you do, it won’t be a relationship rooted in love; it will be rooted in fear and resentment.

Letting go means surrendering to the possibility that whatever happens will be for both of your highest good. It’s not easy, but it is liberating. The more you practice, the more you learn to trust life itself and your actions start to come from the heart, not from fear.

2. Live in Your Heart, Not in Your Head

The next step is all about presence. When your partner is speaking, are you truly listening or are you busy preparing your response?

Remember: no one else on this planet experiences the world exactly the way you do. Your partner sees through a different lens. When you drop into your heart instead of your head, you can connect with their perspective, even if you don’t fully agree with it.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Listen with big ears and an open heart. Literally, imagine your ears and heart getting bigger.  Try to put yourself in their shoes instead of pushing your point across.
  • Validate and reflect back. Repeat what you heard in your own words, with kindness and softness, so they know they’ve been seen and heard.
  • Keep your tone gentle. Hearing doesn’t mean agreeing, but you can disagree with love and respect.

When someone feels deeply heard and understood, their heart softens. Connection becomes possible again.  This is when people say, “Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?”.  I say “Do you want to be right or do you want to stay connected?”

3. Practice Forgiveness

The third step is forgiveness – one of the hardest, yet most freeing practices in love.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean excusing hurtful behavior or erasing boundaries. It means releasing the anger and resentment that keep you weighed down. Sometimes, it’s about shifting your expectations of what someone should be or is capable of doing or being. Other times, it’s about remembering that you too make mistakes, and compassion goes both ways.

A practice I often return to is the Ho’oponopono mantra:
I forgive you. Please forgive me.

It’s a reminder that we’re all human…stumbling, learning, and growing. And when forgiveness is practiced consciously, it creates space for lightness, peace, and even deeper love.

What about you?

  • What expectations or standards are you holding your partner to?
  • Which ones, if softened, could open space for healing?
  • And where do you need to forgive them, or even yourself?

I’d love to hear what comes up for you. Share what you’re struggling to let go of in your relationship, and let’s explore ways to heal together.

Because the truth is: relationships aren’t saved by control, arguments, or fear. They’re saved through surrender, heart, and forgiveness.

Warmly,

Linda
