From Stuck to Free:  The Science and Experience of Psychedelic Therapy

I had an incredible psychedelic facilitation training in Jamaica, and I have to say—the more I dive into the research and experience these well-facilitated ceremonies with experts, the more I’m convinced that psychedelic therapy is “one of the best” ways to break free from those non-serving, repetitive thought and behavior patterns we’ve unknowingly perfected over the years that hold you back. 

When I first arrived, a neuroscientist was already conducting a few studies (which I’ll share results from as soon as I get them!). There was this mix of curiosity and nervous energy in the air—people were anxious about what they were about to experience, and there was definitely some sizing each other up, figuring out who felt safe, who they could trust. Everyone shared their intentions, slowly getting to know one another. The second day was packed—movement, breathwork, and then the ceremony itself. The experiences ranged wildly. Some people’s bodies shook the entire time, others had beautiful visions and overwhelming feelings of love. And then there were those who faced deep fears—fear of death, fear of losing control, feelings of bleakness and despair. 

What is Secretly Holding You Back

What surprised me the most during the integration the next day was how resistant people were to having any kind of “negative” experience. Which, when you think about it, is both surprising and totally expected. Society and our own psyche have conditioned us to push away anything that doesn’t feel good. But the truth is, what comes up in a ceremony is what’s already been sitting there in your subconscious, waiting to be acknowledged. Psychedelics have a way of peeling back those protective layers, bringing up years of suppressed emotions so we can finally face what’s been holding us back from true joy—or even deep sadness. This expectation that everything in life has to be happy and perfect all the time? That’s a huge reason why people struggle with anxiety and depression and stay trapped by their fears. The attachment to always feeling good actually drains our energy and life force. 

The Power of Letting Go and Trusting

By the second ceremony, people started letting go of their expectations and just flowed with whatever their journey brought them. And by the end of the retreat? The level of love, connection, and community was just beautiful to witness. It was fascinating to see how the people who had annoyed each other during the ceremonies—maybe someone cried too much, made too much noise—ended up becoming sources of deep insight. One girl, for example, was so irritated by a woman sobbing next to her that she had to angrily leave the tent. Later, she realized it reminded her of how her mother used to latch onto her emotionally and cry all the time. By the end of the retreat, they had actually become close friends.

Psilocybin is known for breaking linear thinking and making the brain more flexible, allowing us to perceive things differently. It brings suppressed emotions and memories to the surface, helping people process unresolved psychological issues. While some describe this as the release of "stored energy," it’s really about gaining access to subconscious thoughts and emotions—giving you the chance to process and heal.
