Who made the rules?

Jul 01, 2024

In sixth grade, I can clearly remember questioning my teacher about the purpose of studying history; seemed like for years. Unfortunately, instead of a satisfying answer, my teacher chose to respond sarcastically and belittle me in front of the entire class. This experience had a profound negative impact;  I went from straight A's to straight F's, and stopped participating in the class. I really wished my teacher had made the subject matter more relatable, highlighting how history repeats itself and its relevance to the present.

I have always been driven by the “why". I often find myself wondering whether my actions are driven by personal values and fulfillment or simply following societal expectations. I often question how and why these societal norms originated.  Who came up with life milestones, such as graduation, marriage, family, a long career, and retirement?. Who determined that material possessions and a secure retirement account equate to happiness and security? Sometimes I wonderif most people follow these milestones conciously or unconciously?

A recent comment from someone about my frequent moves recently (especially since the onset of COVID) made me look at my pattern of moving.  During this process, I reached out to a healer/psychic, who shed light on my impulsive tendencies of moving and even told me that I was a nomadic/gypsy in a past life (do you believe in past lives?).  This insight resonated with me, allowing myself to understand myself more.  Although in some cultures, people live in the same neighborhoods most of their lives, in some cultures people are always moving.  No right or wrong.  Also, it made me realize that home is within me, and not an outer shelter. While I definitely want to be less impulsive and more mindful when I move, I have come to the realization that a lifetime of staying in one place may not align with my authentic journey.

None of these choices – pursuing more wealth or material possessions, for example – is good or bad. It all comes down to making mindful choices that align with your true self and the life that will make YOU happy vs just following the norm.

I'd like to share my favorite quote of the month:

"Nothing in this world is as pure as the understanding of one's true self."

If you want to experience more fulfillment in your relationships (increased love and communication instead of frustration and reactivity), more joy and peace at work as opposed to stress and burnout, and improved health, I encourage you to check out my course.
