There’s a lot going on in the world right now, and when everything feels chaotic—inside or out—facing a big decision can feel extra overwhelming. Whether you’re in the middle of a divorce, starting a new job, considering a major life change, or facing something deeply personal.
I want to share a process that’s helped me—and many of my clients—feel grounded and confident when life feels anything but clear. These tools work whether you’re deciding to leave a relationship, move to a new city, make a financial choice, or simply take your next step after a life-altering shift.
Why Is It So Hard to “Make the Right Decision”?
If you’ve been circling the same question in your head for days (or months), you’re only human. There is no exact right or wrong decision? Especially for women going through divorce or emotional upheaval, decision-making gets clouded by self-doubt, fear of the unknown, and guilt. One moment you’re 100% sure, and the next… you’re spinning again.
Sound familiar?
Step One: Write It Down
Start by creating a simple pro/con table. Nothing fancy. Just write it all out:
What are the benefits of this choice?
What are the not-so-great parts?
This helps take the swirl out of your head and put it into something tangible. It gives your nervous system a moment to breathe.
Then, add a second layer most people forget: YOUR VALUES.
Ask yourself:
Which of these pros are aligned with your values?
Am I saying no because it feels wrong—or is it fear based – fear of failure?
This isn’t about being fearless. It’s about being honest with yourself and knowing that if you are following your values, you’re on the right track.
Step Two: Check In with Your Body (Yes, Really)
This is where we bring in the magic.
Your body knows.
But we’ve been so trained to ignore our inner wisdom, especially after emotional trauma or controlling relationships. We learned to trust logic over instinct… until our body starts screaming at us: migraines, stomach knots, fainting spells, panic attacks.
In fact, I often ask my clients who’ve fainted or experienced sudden physical symptoms,
“What were you thinking about right before fainting?”
And nine times out of ten, the answer reveals exactly why their body responded that way. It’s rarely random. There’s often a deep emotional or energetic misalignment signs your body is trying to alert them to.
Start listening before it gets that loud.
Read through your list. Slowly.
Pause with each item and notice:
Does my heart expand?
Does it contract?
Do I feel a sense of openness or resistance?
This is your heart’s way of speaking. Of guiding you back to yourself. And the more you practice this, the more you’ll feel your intuition waking back up.
Step Three: Tune into Your Higher Self
Beyond your body, beyond your thoughts, there is your higher knowing—the version of you that sees the bigger picture and wants your healing and knows what the right choice is.
You can connect to this through quiet moments, journaling, breathwork, or just placing your hand on your heart and saying:
“Show me the truth, show me the way.”
Trust doesn’t always feel peaceful at first. Sometimes it’s shaky. But over time, you’ll learn to recognize your truth by how it feels, not how perfect it looks on paper.
Step Four: Make A Choice … and Trust It
Perfection is a myth. There’s no way to know for sure how any decision will play out; there are so many variables. But here’s the reframe: you’re making the right decision with the information you have right now.
That’s all anyone can do.
It might feel uncomfortable. Change usually does. Especially after emotional trauma, discomfort can feel like danger—but it’s often just growth.
So affirm to yourself:
“I am making the best choice for me.”
“It’s safe to trust myself.”
“Even if it’s hard, I will not abandon me.”
Let go of needing to be certain. Let go of what could have been. You can’t measure the path you did not take. All you can do is walk the one you choose—with compassion, courage, and care. It’s the only way to move forward instead of living between the past and the future.
Here are some questions I am asked…
Q: How do I trust myself again after making the “wrong” decisions?
A: Start small. Learn to notice what your body feels like when something is a yes or a no. Rebuilding trust takes time—but your intuition is never gone, just buried.
Q: What if I make the “wrong” choice?
A: Every decision teaches you something. “Wrong” choices often lead to the right path eventually. What matters most is honoring yourself along the way.
Q: Why do I have fear of making decisions?
A: Trauma can cause decision paralysis. Your nervous system may associate choices and stepping into the unknown as danger. Gentle breathwork and somatic tools can help regulate this response so clarity can return and you can see signs you’re on the right path.
