Have you ever noticed that when you’re stressed, your mind just won’t stop talking?
You keep replaying the same story, the same conversation, the same worry again and again.
It’s like a song on repeat that you can’t turn off, no matter how many times you tell yourself, “Just stop thinking about it.”

I see this all the time with my clients.
They’ll come in for a session and start telling me what’s been going on: a tough breakup, a conflict with a partner, family member or at work, a decision that’s keeping them up at night.
But sometimes, I’ll notice that we’ve talked about the exact same story… three sessions in a row.

It’s not that they’re being dramatic or stuck on purpose. It’s actually a sign that their nervous system is dysregulated. Their body is in survival mode, and their mind is desperately trying to make sense of something that feels unsafe.

What’s Happening in the Brain When You Overthink

Here’s the science behind it.
When you’re calm, your prefrontal cortex , the rational, logical, decision-making part of your brain, runs the show. It helps you see things clearly and find solutions.  This is when you are your authentic, centered self.

But when you’re stressed or emotionally overwhelmed, your amygdala (the alarm center of your brain) takes over. It triggers the fight, flight, or freeze response, flooding your body with adrenaline and cortisol.

At that point, blood flow actually shifts away from the prefrontal cortex and toward the limbic system.
In simple terms: your thinking brain goes offline, and your emotional brain takes the wheel.

So when someone is looping or ruminating, telling the same story over and over – or stuck in freeze and not able to respond in a situation – it’s because their body is stuck in a stress response. The mind is trying to find safety by “thinking its way out,” but the real solution lies in the body.

Why Talking About It Doesn’t Always Help

While communication is important, when your nervous system is activated, talking often keeps you spinning in circles and staying in your mind.

The story isn’t the real problem…the stress response is.
When the body is flooded with emotion, logic doesn’t help. The more we try to “figure it out,” the more we feed the loop.

Remember this quote by Einstein?

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them“.

In fact, sometimes the pain we’re looping on isn’t even something we can control.
It might be an old heartbreak, an ongoing family situation, or something happening in the world that feels too big to fix.
In those moments, what we need isn’t another mental strategy;  it’s regulation.  We need to calm the body so the mind can follow.

Sitting With the Pain…Connecting to the Body

Just the other day, I woke up with a headache.
My first thought was, “Maybe I should take an Advil.”
I rarely do that (maybe once a year)  but I had a full day ahead and didn’t want to slow down.

Then I paused.
I decided to lean into the pain instead of immediately trying to get rid of it.
I sat quietly, breathing into the tightness around my neck and shoulders.

Within a few minutes, I realized how much stress I’d been carrying…the heaviness of the last six months, the tension of the world, and some personal challenges that I hadn’t fully processed.

As I kept breathing and letting my body feel, the pain began to soften.
Not because I “thought it away,” but because I finally gave my body permission to feel and to release.

That’s the magic of embodiment: when we stop fighting the discomfort and start listening to what the body is trying to tell us, healing begins.

The Way Through: Get Your Body on Board

When the old story comes up; that looping thought, that inner argument, that pain from the past – don’t try to solve it first.
Instead, turn toward your body.

Here are a few simple ways to help regulate when you feel caught in mental spiraling:

  • Breathe slowly, especially on the exhale. Long exhales activate the vagus nerve and signal safety to the brain.
  • Feel your feet on the ground. Grounding through your senses helps bring you back to the present moment.
  • Move your body. Stretch, shake, walk, or sway – movement releases trapped stress energy.

When the body calms, blood flow returns to the prefrontal cortex.
And that’s when insight returns.
You can think clearly, see options, and respond instead of react.

Living in Your Wholeness

We heal most deeply when all parts of us are on board; not just the intellect, but the body, emotions, and spirit.

Your mind has a role;  it helps you understand and create meaning.
But your body holds the wisdom that tells you when you’re safe, when you’re tense, and when you’ve been carrying too much for too long.

So the next time you catch yourself overthinking or repeating the same story, remember:
It’s not about thinking harder.
It’s about coming home to your body.

Take a breath.
Feel your feet.
And remind yourself  “calm isn’t found in the story. It’s found in your nervous system”.
