Feeling of Inadequacy
Let’s talk about a quiet ache that lives in almost everyone I’ve worked with.
The feeling of not being good enough.
It might show up as comparisons. As that inner critic that whispers, “You should be further along by now,” or “Why can’t you get it right like everyone else?”
99% of my clients carry this belief in some area of their life.
And here’s the important truth; it’s because they’re measuring themselves against expectations that were never truly theirs to begin with.
Breaking Up with Society’s Checklist: A Journey Back to Self-Worth
This feeling of not-enoughness often begins when we compare ourselves to someone else’s path. To someone else’s timeline. To someone else’s definition of success.
Our society has created an invisible checklist:
Finish college by 22.
Find a partner.
Buy a house.
Have kids.
Climb the career ladder.
Then compare your house to other, your job to others, your children to others, and the list goes on.
And if you don’t follow that timeline, or if you decide not to follow it at all, you’re left with a sense that you’re falling behind. That something’s wrong with you.
But let me ask you this:
Behind according to who? Wrong based on what?
Recently, I watched Bridgerton. I resisted it for a while, but I finally gave in, and I’m so glad I did.
What struck me wasn’t just the romance or the drama, but the heavy weight of societal expectations placed on women (and men) at that time. Your value was tied directly to whether you married and produced children. If you didn’t, there was shame. You were seen as less than. Unworthy. An outcast.
And while we like to think we’ve come a long way since then, those pressures are still alive today, they’ve just changed a little.
Now we’re expected to be successful and serene. Beautiful, productive and high-achieving. Married and fiercely independent.
It’s a moving target—and no one is immune.
But What If the Problem Isn’t You?
What if you’re not “failing”?
What if the issue is that you’ve been trying to fit into a mold that was never designed for your soul?
We’re all born with different values, desires, temperaments, and dreams. Yet we’re expected to walk the same narrow path.
That pressure can lead to shame. Shrinking.
Disconnection from yourself.
And eventually… that sinking feeling: “I’m not enou
You’re Good Enough
Here’s where you can create a shift in your heart. Get honest about what matters to you. Create goals based on your own standards.
Begin closing the gap between what you think you should want and what you actually want. Set your own expectations. This takes some time and effort to really tune in and be able to notice in what areas are you following societal expectations and in what areas that doesn’t really work for you!! Practice checking in and staying true to yourself, without shame, without judgment, and without the mental chatter that says you’re behind, and feeling like you’re not measuring up.
Set your own expectations and if you don’t meet a goal, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Maybe it means the goal needs to be revised. Or that it’s time to re-evaluate.
Stuck In a Cycle? Here Are Some Reflection Prompts:
These questions are meant to help you get to the root of your “not enough” story and begin rewriting it.
- Where in my life do I feel like I’m falling behind or not measuring up?
- Whose standards am I trying to live up to? Society’s? Family’s? My younger self’s? My friends?
- What expectations have I internalized that bring forth negative self talk?
- What would it look like to release those expectations and define my life on my own terms? Time lines, goals that bring more harmony?
- What brings me joy, meaning, and peace—regardless of how it looks from the outside?
Stop Feeling Like You Aren’t Good Enough
We were never meant to fit into a system where everyone’s needs and paths were suppose to be the same. If you are reading this, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your expectations and return to your truth.
Let the old expectations fall away.
Write a new story…one that honors who you are, what you value, and how you want to live.
And if the old stories creep back in (because they will), come back to your breath. Come back to your body. Come back to the quiet knowing inside you that says:
I am already enough. And think about all the things that you have accomplished.
Much Love,
Linda
