As humans, we crave certainty. Our nervous system is wired to feel safe when life feels predictable. But if you’ve gone through divorce or are facing major relationship decisions, you know that life rarely fits into neat timelines. The ability to pause, breathe, and stay in the unknown is one of the most powerful skills you can develop. And yet, it’s also one of the hardest.

I once had a client who came to me right after a painful breakup. She wanted to rush into the next relationship because being alone felt unbearable. Or the thought of never being in another relationship was even more unbearable. But in coaching, we slowed everything down. Together, we practiced sitting in the unknown, trusting that clarity would come in time. And it did. The choice she eventually made came from self-awareness, not desperation. That’s the difference between decisions that heal and decisions that repeat old cycles.

When you’re going through divorce or a relationship transition, the urge to control the outcome is strong. You want to feel safe, so you push for quick answers. But will the immediate outcome really bring you peace? How many times have you been certain a relationship, a conversation, or a situation was going to turn out one way only to watch it unfold completely differently?

The truth is: our need to control is often really a need for safety. That’s where relationship coaching can be transformative. Instead of relying on other people or circumstances to calm the fear of uncertainty, you learn how to create safety and clarity inside yourself. Coaching gives you tools to stay grounded, even when the future feels unclear. It’s really about self mastery, because we all know that you can’t control much outside of ourselves.

Sometimes, clarity does require a decision, but even then, there’s power in giving space and intention. For example, I had a friend who was dating someone for two years and longed for marriage. He wasn’t sure. They agreed to take two months to reflect, and by the end, the answer was was clear for both of them. The pause in combination with intention created space for the answer to surface.

So where in your life are you pushing for an answer out of fear, rather than trust? Can you soften into the unknown and allow clarity to find you? Can you find the safety within yourself instead of wanting to change the outer world?
