Have you ever noticed how much of your life is spent somewhere other than where you actually are?
Your body may be sitting at the dinner table, walking the dog, working at your desk, or spending time with friends, but your mind is replaying yesterday’s conversation or worrying about next week’s problem.
I know this because I catch myself doing it too.
I am naturally a planner. I like solving problems. I often find myself thinking five steps ahead, anticipating what might happen and preparing for every possible outcome. In many ways, this has served me well. It has helped me build businesses, navigate challenges, and support others.
But over the years, I’ve noticed something important.
Some of the best decisions I’ve ever made didn’t come from planning.
They came from presence.
They came from being fully available to what was happening right in front of me.
The Cost of Living in the Future
Planning is healthy.
Worrying is different.
Planning allows us to prepare and take action. Worry keeps us trapped in imagined scenarios that may never happen.
When we spend our lives living in the future, we miss the opportunities that exist in the present moment.
We miss conversations.
We miss connections.
We miss signs, invitations, and possibilities that could change the direction of our lives.
Most importantly, we miss experiencing the life we’re working so hard to create.
The future has a way of convincing us that happiness, safety, or success is always just around the corner.
“If I can just solve this problem…”
“If I can just make more money…”
“If I can just get through this challenge…”
Then I’ll relax.
Then I’ll be happy.
Then I’ll feel safe.
But that finish line keeps moving.
The Past Often Lives in the Present
The opposite is also true.
Many of us aren’t living in the future.
We’re living in the past.
We carry old wounds, disappointments, betrayals, fears, and experiences that continue to influence how we respond today.
A comment from a friend triggers us.
A disagreement with a partner creates anxiety.
A business setback feels catastrophic.
Not because of what is happening now, but because our nervous system remembers something from before.
The body often reacts before the conscious mind has a chance to catch up.
This is why I often encourage clients to pause and ask a simple question when fear arises:
“Is this fear coming from this moment, or is it coming from my past?”
That question creates awareness.
And awareness creates choice.
Without awareness, we react automatically.
With awareness, we can consciously choose how we want to respond.
Presence Begins in the Body
One of the biggest misconceptions about personal growth is that it happens only through thinking.
But healing doesn’t happen solely in the mind.
It happens in the body.
Your nervous system is constantly scanning for signs of safety or danger.
When we are stressed, fearful, overwhelmed, or anticipating problems, our bodies often tighten without us realizing it.
Our shoulders creep upward.
Our jaw clenches.
Our neck becomes stiff.
Our hips tighten.
Our breathing becomes shallow.
The body prepares for danger, even when no danger is present.
That’s why one of my favorite practices is incredibly simple.
Pause.
Take a slow breath.
Notice your shoulders.
Notice your neck.
Notice your jaw.
Notice your hips.
Then exhale and allow those areas to soften.
As you breathe out, quietly say:
“It’s safe to surrender.”
Take another breath.
“It’s safe to be here.”
You may be surprised by how quickly your body responds.
The body understands safety long before the mind believes it.
What If We Trusted This Moment?
Living in the present doesn’t mean ignoring responsibilities.
It doesn’t mean avoiding plans or pretending challenges don’t exist.
It simply means recognizing that this moment is the only place where life is actually happening.
Right now, ask yourself:
Am I safe?
Do I have what I need in this moment?
Am I okay right now?
For many of us, the answer is yes.
And when the answer is yes, we can soften.
We can surrender.
We can stop carrying tomorrow before it arrives.
We can stop reliving yesterday as if it’s still happening.
We can simply be here.
And sometimes, that’s where the real magic begins.
