If you’ve been living with fatigue that no amount of sleep fixes, joint pain that comes and goes without explanation, brain fog that makes you feel like a stranger in your own mind, or a body that just doesn’t feel like yours anymore; you are not imagining it, and you are not alone.

Autoimmune disease is one of the most under-recognized epidemics of our time. It’s estimated that autoimmune conditions affect tens of millions of people, and yet so many walk from doctor to doctor for years before getting a diagnosis let alone real answers about why it’s happening.

What Autoimmune Disease Actually Is

In a healthy body, the immune system’s job is to protect you — to identify what’s foreign and defend what’s yours. In autoimmune disease, something shifts. The immune system starts to misread the body’s own tissue as a threat, and it turns its defenses inward. Depending on where that attack lands, it shows up as very different diagnoses: Hashimoto’s in the thyroid, rheumatoid arthritis in the joints, lupus across multiple systems, psoriasis in the skin, MS in the nervous system…the list goes on. There are over 80 recognized autoimmune conditions.

The Symptoms People Miss

Autoimmune symptoms are notoriously vague, which is part of why they get dismissed or misdiagnosed for so long. Common signs include:

  • Persistent fatigue or chronic fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Joint and muscle pain or swelling, sometimes migrating from place to place
  • Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, or memory lapses
  • Skin changes: rashes, dryness, or unexplained sensitivity
  • Digestive issues, bloating, or food sensitivities that seem to appear out of nowhere
  • Hormonal irregularities
  • Recurring low-grade fevers
  • A general sense of “something is wrong” that bloodwork doesn’t always capture right away

Because these symptoms overlap with stress, burnout, and simple aging, many people are told they’re “just tired” or “just stressed,” and sent home without real answers.

Why Mainstream Medicine Often Misses the Root Cause

Conventional medicine is excellent at managing autoimmune disease once it’s identified and medication absolutely has its place in that process. But diagnosis is often slow, and treatment tends to focus on suppressing the immune response rather than asking the deeper question: why did the body start attacking itself in the first place?

This is where a lot of doctors, through no fault of their own, run out of road. Medical training focuses on the biology of disease, not on the nervous system, the emotional history, or the lived experience stored in the body that so often sits underneath it.

The Piece Most People Never Hear: Emotion and the Nervous System

Physician and trauma expert Dr. Gabor Maté has spent decades studying the link between chronic stress, emotional suppression, and physical illness and autoimmune disease is one of the clearest examples. Women make up roughly 80% of all autoimmune patients, and Dr. Maté’s work points to something beyond genetics or bad luck: a pattern of chronic emotional self-suppression, especially anger, and a habit of prioritizing everyone else’s needs before one’s own.

When emotions are suppressed over and over the nervous system doesn’t just “let it go.” It stores that tension. The body stays in a low-grade state of fight-or-flight, flooding the system with stress hormones like cortisol, which over time disrupts immune regulation and fuels the very inflammation that autoimmune disease runs on.

In other words: unresolved emotional tension isn’t just “in your head.” It lives in your tissue, your fascia, your nervous system and it can be a root driver of the disease process itself.

So What Actually Helps?

Medication can calm a flare and give the body breathing room, and for many people it’s an essential part of care. But if the nervous system and the stored emotional tension are never addressed, the body often keeps looking for a way to express what hasn’t been resolved.

This is where somatic work comes in practices that work directly with the body and nervous system, rather than only the mind:

  • Breathwork to shift the nervous system out of chronic fight-or-flight and into a state where healing is actually possible
  • Fascia release and bodywork to help release tension that’s been physically held, sometimes for years
  • Nervous system regulation practices that teach the body it’s safe to come out of high alert
  • Somatic and yoga wall work to reconnect with parts of the body that have gone numb, guarded, or disconnected
  • Space to feel and express emotion that may have been suppressed for a long time, without judgment

None of this replaces medical care. It works alongside it — addressing the layer that bloodwork and prescriptions alone often can’t reach.

You Are Not Broken

If you’re living with an autoimmune condition, please hear this: your body is not betraying you for no reason, and you are not weak for struggling. Your body has been working incredibly hard, often for a very long time, to protect you the only way it knew how. Healing is possible and it often starts with finally listening to what the body has been trying to say all along.
