When people hear the phrase relationship coach, they usually think it’s about fixing couples or patching up broken partnerships. And yes, sometimes that’s part of it. But honestly? Real relationship coaching starts somewhere much deeper; your relationship with yourself.

Because the truth is, how you treat yourself sets the tone for how you show up with everyone else. The way you talk to yourself, the old beliefs you carry, the patterns you repeat-they all play out in your relationships. Maybe you put other people’s needs before your own just to feel safe. Maybe you fall into blaming others when things don’t work out. Either way, your inner relationship is quietly directing every outer one.

I love what Rumi said:
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

Discovering Your Relationship Patterns

So, where do we start? The first step is noticing your patterns. We all have them. Some are obvious, like pulling away when conflict shows up. Others are subtle, like putting on a smile while secretly feeling unworthy. These patterns usually began years ago as a way to protect you. They helped you survive. But after a while, they can keep you stuck replaying the past in your present relationships.

In coaching, I guide you to see these patterns clearly, not just in your thoughts, but also in your nervous system and your body. Because sometimes it’s not just a mental loop; it’s the tension in your chest, the knot in your stomach, or the urge to shut down. Together, we explore when these patterns show up, how intense they feel, and how they ripple through your connections with others.

And here’s the beautiful part: once you become aware and can even appreciate how those patterns once protected you, you can start to gently let go of what no longer serves you. That’s when you begin choosing healthier, more empowering ways of being with yourself and with the people you love.

As a life coach and also working with people going through divorce, breakups my first priority is helping you discover what’s actually getting in the way of loving yourself. And I don’t mean just saying you love yourself, because most of us think we do. I mean really loving yourself… even when you feel messy, when your “ugly side” shows up, when you compare yourself to others, or when you want to hide parts of who you are.

True self-love is being able to look yourself in the eye on those hard days and still say, “I’ve got you. I still like you.  You are ok.” That’s where healing begins. And it’s not just mental; it’s physical, too. The body holds the patterns, the tension, the doubt.

Once you can truly accept and care for yourself in that deeper way, it changes everything. The less you judge yourself, the less you judge others. The more you love yourself, the bigger your heart gets to love others. You open the door to more genuine, loving relationships and a softer deeper acceptance of others.

When you change the way you relate to yourself, you naturally transform how you relate to everyone else. And that’s the heart of relationship coaching.

Much Love,

Linda
