Three powerful tools to make decisions with clarity & confidence

We’ve all been there; standing at a crossroads, looping through the same thoughts, unable to land anywhere. If you’ve ever felt paralyzed by a decision, this one’s for you. Today I want to share three practices that have genuinely changed the way I (and many people I work with) navigate those difficult, uncertain moments.

Put It on Paper

You’ve probably heard the classic advice: write a pros and cons list. And yes, there’s a reason it’s stood the test of time. But the real magic isn’t in the list itself. It’s in the act of writing.

There is a hand-brain connection that activates the moment pen meets paper. As you write, things surface that were buried under the noise; thoughts you didn’t even know you were having. The page becomes a mirror. Ideas that felt tangled in your mind suddenly have shape, order, weight.

So next time you’re stuck, don’t just think – HAND write it down. Not with a pad or iPhone!! Give your mind somewhere to land.

Borrow a Perspective

Find someone you respect and trust and ask them to think with you. Not to tell you what to do. Not to solve it for you. Just to share their perspective openly, without agenda.

Here’s the thing so many of us miss: we get so caught up in preparing our reply that we stop actually listening. We’re nodding along while mentally figuring out our next sentence that we miss the one small nugget, the unexpected angle, the question we never thought to ask, that might have changed everything.

The gift of a brainstorming is the permission to slow down. To let the conversation go somewhere new. You don’t have to commit or do any of it,  but there is often one tiny word or thought that opens a door you hadn’t seen.

Ask Your Body

This is the one I consider most important and the one we’ve been taught to ignore.

We live in a culture that puts so much emphasis on intellect above all else. We trust our thoughts, our logic, our reasoning. And while those tools are valuable, they are only part of the picture. Our bodies hold a wisdom that our minds often can’t access; a knowing that exists beneath words and analysis…. Intuition.

A dear friend recently shared that she has begun connecting to her heart and body before making decisions. The result? Not only is she making better choices, she feels less lonely, more embodied, more herself. That was so powerful to hear.

Here’s a simple practice: sit quietly with your decision and notice; does your chest feel contracted, tight, braced? Or does it feel expansive, open, curious? Your body is speaking. The question is whether you’re willing to listen.

One important note: if the decision is new or unfamiliar, your first response might be fear and that’s okay. We are wired to prefer the known. Sit with it for more than a few minutes. Return to it across hours or days. Let the body get used to something new and unfamiliar before you ask it again.
