For many of us, self judgment began way before our current situation;
it started in childhood.
We were raised in a generation where “motivation” came through pressure. Most parents believed that pushing us, correcting us, or pointing out what we did wrong would make us stronger. And they did it out of love. They truly thought that tough love was the path to success.
But what many of us learned instead was something else entirely:
We learned to become hard on ourselves.
To equate worth with achievement.
To motivate through self-criticism, not self-compassion.
How Judgment Becomes Our Inner Voice
Fast forward to adulthood…
A relationship ends, we lose money, a promise to ourselves is broken,
and instantly, that old voice returns:
- “You should have known better.”
- “Why can’t you get it right?”
- “It’s your fault.”
This is where I support my clients; not just with the pain of loss, but with the war happening inside.
We don’t just grieve the relationship.
We battle the voice of judgment we inherited.
Pause. Feel This.
Think back to a time you were hard on yourself.
Something didn’t go “perfectly,” and your inner critic came alive.
How did you speak to yourself?
Where did you feel it in your body?
- Tight chest?
- Sinking stomach?
- Shame rising in your throat?
Now ask yourself gently…
Did that voice truly help you grow?
Or did it make you feel smaller, stuck, unworthy?
For many I work with in life coaching and breathwork sessions, this constant inner battle is more damaging than what really happened in life.
Self-Judgment vs. Self-Compassion
Two paths. Two futures.
| Self-Judgment | Self-Compassion |
| “I failed again.” | “I’m human. I’m learning.” |
| Tightness, shame | Softness, safety |
| Stuck in the past | Able to move forward |
| Fear-based pushing | Love-based growth |
Judgment may have served us as children; maybe it pushed us to get approval.
But as adults, it turns into chronic stress, anxiety, and emotional paralysis.
What Compassion Feels Like
Now imagine this instead:
You make a mistake… and meet yourself with grace.
You feel overwhelmed… and you say, “It’s okay. Breathe. Try again.”
What happens inside your body?
Your shoulders drop.
Your breath deepens.
Your nervous system calms down
and healing finally becomes possible.
Awareness Is the First Rewrite
No, it’s not easy.
You’ve spent years, maybe decades, wired to respond with criticism.
But every single time you choose a gentler voice, even once a day, you begin to rewire your story.
- One breath of forgiveness.
- One interruption of self-attack.
- One whispered reminder:
“I am still worthy, even when I’m not perfect.”
This is how self-healing truly begins.
