But the full range of emotions is what makes us beautifully, imperfectly human. Learning how to feel – really feel – them all, without judgment, is one of the hardest and most powerful paths to freedom. If you can fully feel sadness, you can fully feel joy. If you suppress your sadness, you also suppress your joy.

EMOTIONS ARE MESSENGERS (NOT FACTS)

Think of emotions as messages. Sometimes they’re true and urgent: “Hey, a boundary is being crossed – pay attention.” Other times, they’re emotions coming up from the past, and we react to yesterday instead of what’s happening now. Your emotions can become a doorway to heal built-up anger, resentment, unprocessed hurt, sadness, fear, and shame.

A client shared that whenever her partner didn’t text back right away, she felt a surge of fear and anger. It wasn’t really about the delayed reply; it was her nervous system remembering the chaos of childhood, when she felt abandoned and never knew what to expect. Her body had become familiar with that mixer of anxiety and adrenaline. She didn’t like it, but her subconscious believed it kept her safe for so many years, so: “This is what we know. Let’s keep doing it.”

That’s why emotions, while real, aren’t always true. They’re a blend of the present moment and the imprints of your past. Awareness lets you pause and ask: Is this about now, or is an old story replaying?

WHY IT’S GOOD TO FEEL THEM ALL

Avoiding emotions doesn’t make them disappear; it buries them. They show up as tight shoulders, chronic stress, irritability, or burnout. Neuroscience suggests the raw chemical wave of an emotion lasts about 90 seconds; when we resist, suppress, or rehearse it in our minds, it lingers. When we create space to fully feel emotions in the body, we begin to process them and build a healthier relationship with ourselves and others.

Every emotion has value:

  • Anger teaches boundaries.

  • Grief honors the depth of love we’ve felt.

  • Joy fuels connection and play.

  • Fear sharpens awareness when something needs attention.

Feeling the full spectrum creates strength, resilience and also makes us happier individuals. Without the darker sides, there’s no contrast or depth. Without contrast, joy loses its richness; it;s like being on vacation nonstop; eventually the thrill fades. After working hard, rest and vacation feel delicious.

A PERSONAL STORY

There was a season when I tried to stay “positive” no matter what. I thought if I let myself cry or feel fear, I would never stop. The opposite happened. The more I bottled up my fear, the more restless and anxious my body felt.

One day, I let myself really cry and feel the fear, without judgment or trying to stop it. I left the day open to feel and be, to get curious about what was arising instead of forcing myself to feel differently. My chest softened, my shoulders dropped, and for the first time in a long time, I felt space inside. The storm passed, and with it came relief. That day taught me: emotions don’t destroy us when we breathe through them and allow those 90 seconds (or more) to move.

Emotions are energy bundles in motion; let them move through your body rather than stagnate.

HOW TO SHIFT EMOTIONAL STATES

Awareness is the starting point. When you notice you’re stuck in an old loops – fear, shame, anger, or that low-grade “not enough” – try this:

  • Pause & Acknowledge

Name it without judgment: “This is sadness.” “This is frustration.” Naming can cut the charge in half.

  • Breathe Yourself Back to Center

Try simple breathwork: inhale for 4, exhale for 4. Breathe into the spot where you feel tension or pain. This supports the parasympathetic (calming) response; within minutes, your physiology begins to shift.

Tip: If you like, extend the exhale (e.g., inhale 4, exhale 6) to deepen calming.

  • Choose a New Thought And Feel It

Once your body is calmer, choose a new thought. Replace “I’m not safe” with “In this moment, I am safe.” Don’t just think it; feel it. Visualize calm: warmth in your chest, steady breath, shoulders relaxing, trust returning.

  • Engage the Body

Dance, shake, walk, stretch, hum, tap, self-massage. Let your body help anchor the shift. Embodiment makes the new state “stick” far better than thought alone.

  • Practice, Practice, Practice

Like learning an instrument, repetition rewires pathways. Each time you move from unconscious reaction to conscious choice, you teach your body a new “normal.”

REMINDER

If you take nothing else from this, let it be this: your emotions are not problems to fix; they are messengers. Feeling them all doesn’t make you weak; they make you stronger and happier.

As you cultivate love and compassion for yourself, you naturally attract people who mirror that back. You also grow your capacity to offer compassion to others. With practice, you don’t get swept away by every wave, instead you feel lighter, more spacious, and more available for joy and inner peace. You learn to surf. To breathe. To choose. To let your body and mind work together to bring you back to center, again and again.

If you’re ready to practice shifting your emotional state in a safe, guided way, I invite you to explore my breathwork and coaching sessions. Together, we’ll create the space to feel it all and discover the peace and power waiting beneath the surface.
