Have you ever noticed that the moment someone says, “You should…” or “Don’t do that,” something inside you stiffens?

You suddenly don’t want to do it anymore.
Or you want to do the opposite.
Even if it’s good for you.
Even if you agree with it.

Let’s talk about why being told what to do feels so irritating and why this shows up in all relationships, not just romantic ones, but friendships, family dynamics, co-parenting, and even in divorce.

This might help you understand yourself and the people in your life in a whole new way.

We Are Wired for FEEL FREE

One of the deepest human needs is autonomy; the sense that I choose my life.

When someone tells you what to do, even in a loving way, it hits that ancient part of the brain that says… I am losing control!!

Think of a kid learning to tie their shoes.
You reach in to help, and the kid snaps:

“No! I can do it myself!”

Adults feel that way too… we just try to hide it better.

Your partner says, “You should calm down.”  What do you do?  You get even more irritated.
Your friend says, “Just let it go.” And you want to tell them to F**k off.

Something inside you rebels. “Don’t tell me what to do”.

Not because the suggestion is wrong…
But because it is almost like losing your identity.

During Relationship Stress, Autonomy Is the First Thing to Go

Now add any kind of stress:

conflict with a partner

divorce

co-parenting

friendships with tension

pressure from work

financial uncertainty

When you’re under emotional pressure, your nervous system is already on high alert.

You feel overwhelmed….You feel sensitive….You’re managing so much internally that the tiniest comment from someone else can feel like criticism.

Your brain registers it as:

“They don’t trust me.”
“I’m being controlled.”
“I’m not enough.”

And suddenly you’re arguing about which side of the dishwasher the forks go on…
when what you’re really reacting to is feeling powerless and unseen.

Here’s where it gets fascinating.

When your nervous system is activated (fight, flight, freeze), you are no longer operating from your rational thinking brain.  You’re operating from survival mode.

So when someone tells you what to do, you…

shut down

get annoyed

feel defensive

lash out

do the opposite out of pure instinct

This happens in couples constantly.

One person says, “Can you please relax?”
And the other person immediately gets more agitated.

Not because the suggestion was wrong…
but because their nervous system interpreted it as pressure, not support.

This shows up in almost all relationships… partnerships, parents/kids, friendships…

I try and keep trying with my daughter to stop telling her what to do… because rightfully so, when I do, her inner 10-year-old comes out swinging.

It’s not the content.
It’s the dynamic.

No one likes being pushed or told what to do.
Everyone likes feeling they have a choice.

How to Communicate Without Triggering Resistance

People don’t resist the idea. They resist the pressure.

People don’t need instructions; they need to feel seen, heard, and empowered.

When someone feels pressured or corrected, their nervous system tightens and they naturally push back.

Here is a solution…

Lead with validation.

Before offering anything, acknowledge what they’re feeling:

  • “That makes sense.”
  • “I can see why that feels hard.”
  • “Anyone would feel that way.”

Validation softens the conversation and tells their system, You’re safe; I am on your side.

Ask questions instead of giving directions.

Questions help people access their own clarity:

  • “What feels right to you?”
  • “What do you think you need right now?”

Ask permission before sharing your ideas.

This is where resistance disappears.
A simple:

  • “Would it be okay if I shared a thought?”
  • “Can I offer an idea?”

gives the other person a heads up and lets them choose to receive.

Offer your idea gently.

Soft, language works best:

  • “One thing you could explore…”
  • “Something that might help…”

No pressure, no pushing; just options.

Validation creates safety.  Questions create clarity.  Permission creates trust.

When you communicate this way, resistance fades and real connection begins.

Here’s the part most people miss:

Trying to force others to change only drains you.
Trying to convince others only exhausts you.
Trying to control someone’s choices only makes them push back.

But when you stop trying to direct, fix, or manage other people…

You become the calm one.

Because the moment you stop telling people what to do…
you stop needing them to behave a certain way for you to feel okay.

That’s real freedom.
